Have you ever heard of the Watsonville Riots of 1930? 

From January 19, 1930 - January 23, 1930, racially motivated acts of violence toward Filipinos occurred. Prior to the riots, anti-Filipino rhetoric was already in place as a result of immigration policies and capitalistic acts by those who employed Filipino farm workers. During these riots, hunting parties would drag Filipinos out of their homes and beat them to near death. Some of the Filipinos were even thrown over bridges. 

These riots eventually stopped, but acknowledgement did not occur until many years later. It wasn't until 2011 when the State of California issued an apology. And it wasn't until 2020 that the City of Watsonville, CA issued their formal apology. 

How much about this event did you know about?

We've finally come to the finale of season 3, and now it's time to reflect. And as Tidus said in Final fantasy x, "Listen to my story"

This season started off as an idea to better understand my history with community organizing in San Diego. Looking back at it now, this season is only a small fraction of what my history in SD is all about.

I used this episode as a way to reflect on the season as a whole by giving you my side of the story. Throughout this episode, you'll hear me retelling some of the stories told throughout this season, and as I'm doing so, the threads in my story will connect to those that have told theirs. I just wanted to thank each and everyone of you for taking the time to listen to this season. Every story that was recorded was an act of love for history.

Getting Ate Lily Ann for this episode felt very surreal. For those that don't know, Ate Lily Ann has mentored many amazing people in the San Diego Fil-Am community space; her mentorship has trickled down to my generation, so it feels like this conversation of generations has been long overdue.

Throughout this episode, We reflected on some of Ate Lily Ann's upbringing and how that influenced the way she mentored the next generation. we also talk about owning our stripes not as people who are looking for recognition, but as people looking to reflect on how they got to where they are in the present day.

For this week, we have somewhat of a healing episode. We are graced by the presence and voice of Dr. Melissa-Ann Nievera-Lozano as the guest for today.

At the beginning of our talk, Ate Melissa talks about their upbringing in San Diego and the connections that came out of it. As we went deeper into the conversation, we started talking about how participating in community work is a form healing. And not just for ourselves but for those that came before us, and for those that will come after.

We're back for episode twelve with our first returner, Jerry Torne, who was on the second episode of this season. I've known Kuya Jerry for almost ten years, and this was a sit down that has been long overdue.

Through this episode, I had the chance to hear more about his upbringing, and the choices that got him to the point that he's at now.

Going into part two for season 3, we've been graced by the presence and words of Natalie "Noodle" Bagaporo.

In this episode, we get down with Noodle and have a conversation on our legacies with community organizing in San Diego. We also check in with how they grew as a student organizer in Los Angeles, and how legacy and mission and vision brought them back to SD.

Kasamahan Co, formerly know Reclaiming Filipinx Identity, is a media company based out of Hawaii, that started back in 2020. They use multiple platforms including their podcast, Instagram, and YouTube to hold space for Filipinx stories of those in Hawaii. I had the privilege of getting to talk with the CEO, Chachie, to talk about what Kasamahan Co. has been up. Fun fact, Chachie was actually on one of the first episodes of the Pilipinx-American Stories Podcast. 

This episode serves as point of reflection for the media company in terms of its growth and the future. Currently, they are taking a break, but will be back in due time. History was made on July 30, 2021. After six years of development and struggle, the Bay Terrace Senior Center is officially opened to the public. In this episode, we get down with Cynthia Suero Gabler (CK), who spearheaded the efforts. 

Gabler went on to tell us the hardships and emotions that went on during this journey.
