Pine Gap Protests Then and Now - Bob Boughton

Listen Later

"Crouched in a ditch with his bike, near the Alice Springs airport, 34-year-old Bob Boughton was about to attempt the craziest political stunt of his life.  It was 1985…" Alex Barwick - Spies in the Outback.

In the era of Ronald Reagan's Star Wars, Pine Gap facility was expanding. Four men kept a US military Galaxy plane from landing at the Alice Springs airport by riding their bicycles on the tarmac.

This morning on the Big Brekky Show, he shared his reflection on the last forty years. Now an adjunct Professor at University of New England, Bob continues his activism in Central Australia, highlighting the anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist dimension of campaigns against Pine Gap and other US bases in the Asia-Pacific region and the solidarity that this movement sought to build with Indigenous and colonised peoples in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Rallies out on the road into Pine Gap are currently planned fortnightly, the next one on Sunday 20 July from 10am.
