Black, formerly known as Samuel Jackson, is a crack addict caught in the violent world of the drug trade on Philadelphia's mean streets. But that doesn't mean Black is guilty of murdering city councilman Johnny Podres.
And his innocence doesn't mean that he won't be tried and convicted for his crime. He and three other of his friends are going down for the killing, and Black has only one chance to turn things around.
Critic Reviews:
"This powerful, mature first novel stretches the boundaries of crime fiction far beyond the confines of formula." (

Excellent
This was a wonderful twisted love story, that happened to contain crooked cops, a corrupt police force, murder, some nosy neighbors, greed, seduction, reporters on the come-up, one almost-retired detective destined to find answers, and four of the most lovable crack-addicts you could imagine at the center of it all. Jones' novels always contain complex male characters which I love. This book made me laugh and cry...and though I've never known what the "world of addiction" was like...it is painted so clearly in this novel. Jones is easily becoming my favorite crime novelist. Excellent anytime book.

OK
Tough to read about the "pipers" a tough life. A very basic story line. But I learned about life on "crack"
OH MY GOODNESS...WHAT A BOOK!!!!
I'm STILL trying to come back from the reading ride of a lifetime! This book is good on so many different levels that I don't know where to start, but I'll try anyway.
The book opens with two pipers, Leroy and Black, working on various schemes to get money for that next hit. Meantime, at a crack house, the politician Johnny Podres, who is known to be incorruptable, and a possible mayoral candidate is shot to death. What was he doing there? And did the crack addicts, who only wanted to rob him, kill him, or was it someone else that only one person THINKS he may have seen? And how do two addicts, Leroy and Black, end up getting blamed for the killing when they weren't even there at the time? And if the police are so sure that Black, Leroy and maybe even Leroy's girl, Pookie, killed Podres, why are other people dropping like flies? Sucked into this whole horrible mess is Black's lady friend, Clarrise, a respected nurse...and a crack addict. Suddenly, these four are on the run for their lives. What happens once they all hook up is jaw-dropping, heart-stopping scenes that read like a movie. This book should be a movie, it is just that good.
Mr. Jones does an outstanding job of putting human faces on those that society would like to condemn, ignore and eliminate. He makes you feel something as you learn how each of them, Black, Leroy, Pookie and Clarrise ended up as helpless slaves to the pipe.
