Listen Later

Have you ever had a feeling that you should pivot out of healthcare, and wondered what unexpected challenges you might encounter during that transition? Looking for advice from others looking to make a similar career change, and what steps you can take to ensure a successful transition?

In this episode of Healthcare Hacks and Connections, our host, Nate, interviews Riki Rivera, a content creator who successfully pivoted from healthcare to tech. Riki was a collegiate athlete - a pole vaulter from high school to college. She spent about 6 months of her senior year of college in England studying. Riki and her family immigrated from the Philippines to the United States when she was nine years old, and she obtained US citizenship in 2017.

Riki discusses her motivations for making the big change in this episode, including her love and interest in science. They discuss the busy work involved in being a pre-PT student and the importance of following your passions. Through her content, Riki is helping others to build their story and pursue their interests. Overall, the episode aims to inspire and encourage listeners who may be considering a career change.

They will touch on such topics as:

  • What made Riki decide to become a tech content creator? How the pandemic changed her career path, pivoted from a tech person to a physical therapist.
  • Advice for those going through the transition from a physical therapist to a support engineer: “Focus on what you want. Remember the things that you want to do in life.”
  • Tapping into her childhood and trying new things.: “I think that's the biggest thing that many people fear is that they're not going to like it. But so what? You know, at least you tried it.”
  • The importance of finding what brings you joy: “If you like it enough, you can make it work for you. There's no stopping you.”
  • The importance of having a strong foundation and leaning into your hobbies.
  • The importance of being well-rounded in your career. Expand and get out of your comfort zone: “Take the leap and not second-guess yourself, things happen for a reason.”
  • Expanding your horizons: “The bigger the risk, the higher the reward.”
  • Mark Rober's strategy for content creation. “Not everyone can afford to take the leap of faith.” How to find content to post, and what to look for in comments.
  • How to negotiate with brands and influencers. “Never do anything for free.”
  • Be cautious with free content marketing, and never be afraid to ask for help, but always think and consider your audience first.
  • Who inspires her, about her being transformative in 2022, and her retirement goals.

Hack: “Don't ever feel stuck because you're not. Sometimes, more often than not, but if there's something else that's pulling your attention or you feel you really want to explore a little more, do it! Do it because life's too short.”  - Riki Rivera
