Plaid Radio - Episode 38 - Moving from Materialism to Simplicity

Listen Later

Crimson Shults makes happy art—the fruit of a forty-year journey to contentment.

Disillusioned by her Fortune 500 career and the trappings of material excess, Crimson walked away from her mansion with private tennis court, sports cars and lavish vacations with their elusive promises of happiness to start over with a simple life.

A writer who earned a graduate degree in English, Crimson confessed, “I read a thousand books searching for answers in order to avoid the one that held the truth. Reading The Bible changed the trajectory of my path.” She is refined by daily reading of Scripture, now living a quiet, sober and appropriate life. Her paintings are sincere expressions of peace--what she calls, “visual translations of The Bible.”

Crimson strives to purify her art in the similar way she clarified her life, adhering to Saint-Exupery’s observation, “Perfection is attained not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing more to take away.” A self-taught portrait artist working in acrylic and oil, Crimson has removed the subject altogether in her current work through abstraction, allowing composition and color to be inspired by the Word of God.
