Do you have to a have a big picture plan before you can work the plan?
Absolutely and I think these different festival throughout the year and I am committed to are kind of anchor points. To know that I have these about a month apart is fabulous because I have a little time between them. If I can get the big picture, the anchor points and I can plan my work and work the plan and be intentional.
Do you naturally lean towards being a planner or is this more an issue of necessity for you?
I am not usually a planner with my creative side, my art, but I think I am needing to be. I am a planner woth everything else I do. And I am having to take that facet of my personality and apply it to the art.
So you are not planning your pieces, but you are planning what pieces to make?
Both. I am trying to come up with some new things and dial in some new to me pieces and also what are they going to look like? I want a variety of different glaze combos. I tend to go in blue and greens a lot and natural kind of watercolors, but I also know that is not everybody’s favorite colors. I want to have some variety for people too.
Does that mean you walk into the studio every day with a plan in mind now?
More so than I used to. I would love to say I walk in there every day with a plan. I walk in there with an outline.
How detailed is the outline for your studio? Do you have sketches, goals, a firing schedule?
I have, Here is the stuff I have to make, I have a calendar where I I will schedule the bisque firings, schedule the glaze firings. I kind of work backwards getting ready for events.
How do you get back in track when the plan falls apart?
You just start over. You start the next day and go from there.
What habits do you use to work the plan, even on off days?
I think you kind of have to be gentle with yourself. I used to muscle through and white knuckle stuffed I’m too old for that. Life’s too short. So if it’s not a good throw day, I’ll hand build some stuff, or I’ll glaze some pots that need glazing. I will be productive in different ways.
