The plantar fascia is the most bottom superficial level of your foot. It’s a ligament that originates at the heel bone and goes all the way up to the ball of your foot. Plantar fasciitis occurs when that ligament becomes irritated and inflamed, resulting in pain and swelling in the bottom of the heel.
