Publisher's Summary:
The purpose of this audiobook is to introduce the reader to many of the applications of the plasma arc. The applications are almost endless and it is one of the emerging technologies of tomorrow.
According to Geoplasma, Municipal Waste Disposal is one of the most pressing environmental problems of the 21st century. According to the United States EPA, over 245 million tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) were generated in the United States in 2005. Population growth has consequently resulted in a significant increase in Municipal waste for disposal. Simultaneously, there has been increased pressure on business and civic leaders for better land use, environmental stewardship and sustainable development. Plasma Arc processing of waste materials is an innovative solution. It not only effectively disposes of waste but also creates large quantities of energy from MSW, a renewable resource. The combinations of solid waste disposal challenges and the recent steep increases in energy costs make plasma arc applications an important alternative to waste disposal in many markets, particularly island and peninsular states and densely populated areas where land costs are at a premium and shipping costs are prohibitive.
Members Reviews:
Everything you always wanted to know about plasma power but didn't know who to ask.
The big picture and the real world details - If you found this book by George Sites, you probably know a little about some type of high-temperature, high-power, plasma power application and want to know more. You found what you are looking for...
The first half of the book discusses the broad world of plasma power applications and explains all of the related building blocks needed for a real system. This is a really useful overview of what a complete installed application might include. It also describes the astounding range of applications that all use the same basic plasma power supplies. Metal cutting is best known. Other applications described include simulating space re-entry temperatures, depositing metallic atoms on plastic film or glass, separating materials to their base elements, and even growing industrial diamonds.
The second half gets into the details of plasma power supplies. It describes and compares different topologies. It also details the different control systems that characterize different power supplies to suit different applications. Of particular recent interest are how these combine to improve power factor, harmonics, and operating costs.
The very best part is how the author used his years of contacts throughout the industry to include real-world photos and diagrams from numerous manufacturers to show how theory really get embodied in functioning hardware.
The companies that make large plasma power supplies and plasma torches are a small collective that generally don't share much information. Whether you are in sales, design, or end applications, you will find 'Plasma At Work' a very rare overview of this unique sphere of engineering. Very few in the industry have the author's decades of experience, and far fewer have been generous enough to share their knowledge. This is a great resource to include to any university program on power engineering.
