Not as engaging as expected

I loved the other two novels by Julia Heaberlin. Playing Dead was a disappointment. The main character was one-dimensional and I struggled through the text. So many loose ends tied up too neatly but that may have been the purpose. Black-Eyed Susans leaves the reading wondering what will become of the main character long after the last page is done. In Playing Dead I don't care enough about the character to speculate.

A New Fan

I must admit I read Julia's newest work first and liked it so much I immediately ordered this. If you are a fan of well written, perfectly paced suspense loaded with 3D characters then look no further. She is in my short list of contemporary authors who know how to turn a phrase or highlight a nuance. Think works by Gillian Flynn, Lisa Gardner, Lisa Unger, Tami Hoag and Chevy Stevens then add Julia to that short list who know how to make you read to the very end even if it is 4am. Terrific read! I will definitely recommend both of her books to my fellow reading-a-holics.

Finally, a thriller I couldn't figure out on page 20

I loved this book! I was sick in bed reading it and stayed awake so long my husband scolded me for not napping on a sick day but it was so delightful I couldn't put it down. The hero of this book is multi-dimensional and I love the theme of putting faith in your family. That the ending takes place in my hometown of Rochester, NY was an unexpected sweet surprise, and the twist was so good that I didn't see it coming, as I usually do. This book did leave me unsettled, in regard to some violence experienced by children, but only because the author is so good at evoking empathy. Read this one!

New favorite author. This book

Wow. New favorite author. This book, like Black Eyed Susans is intense. I'm reading Lie Still now.

Enjoyable

Enjoyable. Believable characters, interesting and informative dialogue. Easy to follow storyline.

I will re-read this story and look forward to other works by this author.
