The first writer to bring the Tarot to the attention of occultists was the French author Court de Gébelin (1724 or 1728-1784), who first published his theories in 1781. Therefore 1781 may be thought of as the beginning of this second stage of Tarot history. The Tarot’s supposed Egyptian origin, its transmission by Gypsies, and its connection to the Egyptian sage Hermes Trismegistus, the Hebrew alphabet, and the mystical Kabalah are all ideas that were first introduced by Court de Gébelin.
