Aesop says "please all and you please none." Are you acting a part or suppressing a part of yourself so thoroughly that if someone saw your true self, they'd be shocked? Compartmentalization adds to the culture of "you don't know me!" However, that's not a fair accusation if we hide ourselves. Compartmentalization enshrines the stuff you're trying to ignore--negative feelings or personality traits--and then they're stuck and they never change.
