P.M. Dalwadi graduated in Fine Arts (painting) from M.S. University, Baroda and stumbled into a student apprenticeship in Visual Communication at NID, Ahmedabad; Where he eventually worked as member of Educational Board, member of Management Board and head of Audio-Visual department. He directly worked under Henri Cartier-Bresson in India and then in Paris at the Magnum Photo Lab.
