2025-01-12: Pastor Mark Quist – Prayer: Teach Us How To Pray

Prayer…  What is it?  How does one engage it?  Prayer can be a difficult thing to engage.  A relationship with God can often seem distant, silent, in a way unreachable.  Yet this is what Christmas was all about.  God incarnate in Jesus comes near in a relationship one can touch and trust.  God has drawn very near through Jesus.
In Luke 11 and Matthew 6, Jesus teaches on prayer as his disciples ask him, “Can you teach us how to pray?”  He responded, “When you pray, say, ‘Our Father in heaven, holy is your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us each day our daily bread.  Forgive us our sins as we forgive everyone who sins against us.  Lead us not into temptation.  And deliver us from the evil one.'”  And then goes on to teach the importance of forgiveness and encourages them to pray with ongoing persistence because God is good and he gives us the Holy Spirit as the Great Communicator, all because of Jesus.
If you have trouble praying, keep it simple.  Simply pray “Our Father in heaven, holy is your name, your kingdom come…”  This prayer of Jesus is birthed out of simplicity and a call to a childlike trust with a childlike persistence.  Many words are not necessary.  Keep it basic – especially when praying is difficult.
And if we are feeling a prayer block, we can take a look at our forgiveness quotient.  Meaning, understanding God’s grace, mercy and forgiveness for us and what it truly means for us – that God through Christ has fully, completely forgiven us – opens a wonderful door to forgiving others.  And this frees us up to better and more easily pray.  God loves us and has forgiven us.  In God’s forgiveness, we are led by the Holy Spirit to forgive ourselves and forgive others.  Just maybe, Jesus teaching on prayer will begin to resonate more and shape our own prayers and our relationship with God in prayer.  Keep it simple.  Pray as Jesus taught us to pray.
See you Sunday!
