Paul is laying a foundation for everything in his letter to the church in Corinth by centering everything around the cross of Christ, Christ crucified, by saying, “The cross of Christ is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved, it is the wisdom and power of God.”  To grasp the depth of truth and meaning for life and living in this one phrase will provide all the wisdom and power we will ever need for living well and finding the good life.

I’ve been working this week on a book of life stories, personal reflections and words of wisdom that my mother put together over the past year.  As we have reviewed it together this week, making final edits, I was struck by her repeated words about wisdom.  As she has reflected on her life, the blessings and the major challenges, she is pointing us kids, grandkids, and great grandkids to the wisdom and power of God.  To seek it, to find it, and then to walk in it.

I’m so grateful for this instruction.  ‘Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ isn’t so much a declaration of independence as it is a declaration of dependence.  Dependence on God’s wisdom and power found, given, and empowered in the cross of Christ, Christ crucified.
