2025-06-08: Pastor Mark Quist – For the Edification of the Body – Good Order and Order in Worship

Friends,
This has been another challenging week for the people of Boulder, CO.  The event on Pearl Street Mall Sunday afternoon brings much reflection.  We lift up before God the families directly affected.  We hold up and support those who are involved with the families directly in care – spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical.
I’ve been asking people who have not been directly involved or affected how this has affected them, and I receive a myriad of responses.  Last Tuesday, before this tragic event, several Boulder pastors gathered with Chief Redfearn and a couple other officers for connection and prayer over breakfast at Tangerine off of Iris and 28th.  My seat was next to the chief.  It was very good to connect and for the Police leaders to make time for this connection.  Very humble and inviting atmosphere.
We discussed many issues and challenges the Police Department is facing on a regular basis, from human trafficking, homelessness, drug abuse, violent crime, mental health, as well as a high probability of funding cuts to the department over the next two years.  All of these things are challenging, foster deep calling, and can bring discouragement and weariness as well.  One bright spot reported, of several, was a recent drop in overall crime.  And then Sunday came.
I wrote up a note of encouragement to the chief and the police department on behalf of our pastor network, who just met with us last Tuesday, after consulting with Ashley, the chaplain, and Luke, a lead pastor in our network, it reads as follows:
Chief Redfearn and to the entire Boulder Police family,
We, the many pastors and faith communities throughout Boulder and the surrounding community are in prayer before God, on your behalf, for you particularly and all who serve in direct service to our community in your department, especially during this trying time.
We pray to God on your behalf, for you and all who serve with you, strength and encouragement, wisdom and perseverance, patience and kindness, through this week and the weeks to come as you work through what is before you.  We pray for God’s working in and through you as you navigate long hours, difficult conversations, and decisions.
For the victims who are suffering, their families, those who witnessed the event and are traumatized, even for this troubled man and his family, we pray God’s comfort, God’s healing, God’s justice and God’s mercy would flow to everyone in need.
Thank you for meeting with us as a faith community regularly.  This past Wednesday’s breakfast was very good.   After this tragic event it highlights the need for connection and close faith community partnerships to flourish for the blessing of all.  One regret after our last meeting, we didn’t pray God’s blessing over you during our time together.  Certainly prayer abounds in regular ways for you, yet, may we not neglect that again when you gather with us, it’s one of the best ways we can offer support and encouragement to you and your Department.
Partnering with you for the flourishing of our community, Lord have mercy,
     Boulder Faith Leaders
Chief Redfearn responded within hours of sending:   Pastor,  Thank you very much. This has been a difficult week but we are getting by and ensuring we do all we can to protect the community.  We so appreciate your support and prayers, and I have shared this email with the entire agency.   Steve
Why share this with you?  Because when a tragic event like this happens in our community, those in community service to the community are greatly burdened with the calling to walk with those directly affected and deal with the aftermath, while at the same time, continuing to build into our community safety and protection for all.  Add to this, the unwanted nationwide media attention and an already challenged police department is further challenged.

Continue to pray for those who serve in emergency and trauma services, for those who are called to serve and protect the people of our community.

Some of our faith community were in that very space just 20 minutes before.  An ordinary day on Pearl Street, lots of Sunday visitors, as we intentionally made attempts to meet and bless some of those who live on the streets of Boulder.  Lord have mercy,

Pastor Mark
