Failure isn’t always a bad thing. I have a few DNF’s under my belt. I finished some races where I felt it wasn’t on my terms, but by sheer survival-instinct. In every case, I have used that motivation to push me forward. In every case, I have come back stronger and overcome the challenge that I previously could not.
It’s no different when it comes to building our nonprofit. The Ordinary Marathoner Foundation is a source of great pride for me. It represents the generosity and spirit of our community, and I expect it to do great things. So, when we received no applicants for our inaugural Running For Autism program, it felt like a failure to me.
At least, at first. Some friends talked me off of the proverbial ledge. And just like a race distance I haven’t conquered yet, I wasn’t going to let this setback beat me. I spent Monday sending out emails, joining online groups and making calls. We have extended the application deadline to May 15th. If we don’t find the proper participant for this program, it won’t be for lack of trying.
