Listen Later

Does university admissions fuel segregation, or do students self-segregate? Do white students have more entrenched patterns of self-segregation behaviour? And Hhow familiar are you with 'race-conscious admissions'?

These are just some of the questions we ask in our 63rd interview is with Julie J. Park, an associate professor at the University of Maryland. Julie teaches courses on race and diversity and recently wrote about race on campus. In this podcast, listen to Julie and Teacher Toolkit founder, Ross McGill discuss Julie’s educational background and affirmative action, how campus activism as a student started Julie’s journey into teaching and research and how she developed her own PhD interest and her research to date.

We also ask what people will gain from reading “Race on Campus: Debunking myths with data” and what is meant by the concept ‘self-segregation’. Julie explains how students interact with one another and how universities cn encourage more diverse experiences for students. Julie shares her feelings on standard attainment tests and their reliability, the benefits of attending a racially diverse college and the dangers of tutoring.

To finish off, we find out what projects Julie is working on, key pieces of advice for teachers that want to become more involved in research and why Julie recommends we interview Natasha Warikoo.
