Conventional wisdom tells us students should speak as little of their L1 (first language) as possible in class so they can speak more English. We look at the assumptions this is based on, consider when we need students to speak English and when it can be beneficial for students to use their L1 in English class. Finally we'll look at some activities which make use of students' L1 which will help them learn English.
