Guy Livingston: The Bug - "music, secrets, and silence"

Podcast: “Forgetting” with Ingrid Lee

Listen Later

Only Edison Could Speak to the Dead (7″ LP in 400-grit sandpaper sleeve)

Following in the footsteps of the Dadaists, of Fellini and Umberto Eco, of Man Ray and Duchamp, of the tape experiments of Steve Reich, Ligeti, and Stockhausen, our subject is new art about ‘forgetting’. Special guest composer Ingrid Lee introduces an avant-garde playlist of memorable sounds, which may or may not all be specifically music. This show will enlarge your brain, and challenge your ears!   In this episode of American Highways, Guy Livingston and Ingrid Lee offer music of William Basinski, Christian Marclay, the band Thumb Thumb, Bernard Hermann, Marjorie Barnes, and Frances White.

AMERICAN HIGHWAYS #45: FORGETTING PLAYLIST
Ingrid Lee is a composer and performer of things not limited to sound. Her work has taken the form of compositions, installations, performances, lectures and objects that explore collective listening practices, the physicality of sound and themes of failure and erasure. Ingrid has been 1/2 of Come On You Fuckers, co-founder of the L.A. Stylophonic, and co-curator of the Paarden Eiland Concert series in Cape Town, South Africa. Ingrid is from Hong Kong/Los Angeles and now resides in the Netherlands where she runs a lecture series, experiments with food and makes noise.

She lost her voice that’s how we knew
Composed by Frances White, written and directed by Valeria Vasilevski, and performed by vocalist Kristin Norderval, the work is open to the universal issues that are implied by the idea of this loss of voice. Norderval’s voice provides the fingerprint for the electronic score. The album contains no explicit narrative, rather it offers an interior drama with an emerging persona, which carries many voices: an inner voice, a voice of memory, a singing voice, a silenced voice, and more. This persona is also a listener, hearing the cries of all these different voices.
