High school students from Pittsfield have joined with students from across the country in demonstrating against gun violence in schools following the killing of 17 students and staff at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Students from Pittsfield High School and Taconic High School recently staged walkouts in solidarity with fellow students in Parkland, while also raising concerns about security in their own schools.
In this edition of the Berkshire Eagle podcast, host Mark Mills speaks with Jenn Smith, community engagement editor and education reporter for the Eagle; Patricia LeBeouf, investigative reporter for the Eagle Eye Team; and Bill Everhart, the Eagle editorial page editor. Comments from two local high school students are included in the discussion.
The podcast explores the local and national issues raised by the mass shooting in Florida, with a focus on whether student activism in the wake of the Parkland massacre will lead to concrete reform when so many other horrific shootings have failed to result in any significant gun regulation.
