Podcast Special: Passing and Passing Privilege

Listen Later

A podcast-exclusive special edition! Friday Night Lip Service presents for you the a live event produced by some Lipsters and friends from the Tranz Collective and the ANU Queer Department. The event was a panel discussion called 'Trans* Passing and Passing Privilege: The Upsides and Downsides'. Seven people who are all trans or sex and/or gender diverse speak about what passing means to them. This is followed up by questions and answers from the audience. Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice from Routledge defines passing as:  'Successfully (convincingly) presenting one’s preferred gender image. May be intentional or unintentional. Passing is a contentious term in transgender communities, and has different meanings for different people. For example, many trans people do not feel that they are presenting as anything but themselves, whereas “passing” seems to imply that they are fooling people or hiding something. In addition some trans people do not desire to “pass” as non-trans, but rather to be respected for their identity and expression, even though people know that their gender identity or expression is different from the one typically associated with their sex.' Links: ANU Queer Department: http://anuqueerdepartment.comTranzAustralia on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TranzAustralia Recorded: 30 May 2015
