Joy is very different from the feeling of excitement, which is fun and amazing, but we see joy as a much fuller feeling, more sustaining and rewarding. Cultivating joy is one of the most important steps we can take toward creating fulfilling lives.
Excitement can appear to be genuine joy but in reality it’s not. For example someone winning the Lottery could start shaking, crying, screaming, or hyperventilating, we could describe this as happiness, but actually it’s evidence that their neurological fight-or-flight mechanism has been triggered. Switching on this mechanism switches off the physiological processes that allow us to relax, connect, and absorb joyful experience.
We discuss joy and how to cultivate the deep and meaningful, peaceful feelings that accompany it.
