Podcast Title: Lake Fork Texas Fishing Report - Cooler Temps Bring In Big Bass and Crappie

Listen Later

As of December 12, 2024, the fishing scene at Lake Fork, Texas, is quite promising, especially with the cooler winter weather setting in.

First off, the water temperature has dropped into the upper 50s, which is ideal for the bigger fish to start showing up. The lake is currently 2.48 feet below pool, and the water clarity is stained, particularly in the creeks due to recent rains.

For today, the sunrise is at around 7:15 AM, and sunset will be at about 5:15 PM. The weather is expected to be cool, with temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to mid-60s, making it a great day to be out on the water.

Fish activity has been varied but productive. Black bass are slow in the early morning, but they start to pick up as the day warms up. Moving baits like chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and square bill crankbaits are working well in 3-5 feet of water around ditches and small creeks. For those targeting bigger bass, Texas rigs and Viper XP jigs near big wood on channels and drop-offs in 3-7 feet are recommended. On warmer days, small streamers and top water patterns can catch active bass in the creeks[1].

Crappie fishing is also excellent this time of year. You can find big numbers of black crappie at the base of shallow trees in 12-18 feet in the mid-lake areas, while white crappie are often suspended halfway down these trees. In deeper water, the black crappie tend to be higher on the trees, and the white crappie are further down[1].

Yesterday, several anglers reported catching a good number of bass, including some lunker bass over 10 inches. The total catch included 143 bass caught and released by 30 members of a local tournament[1].

For the best results, focus on areas loaded with shad, as these attract the larger fish. Hot spots include main lake points, creek bends, and drop-offs. Specifically, the points near the main creek channel and the rounded clay points that don't stand out much but can have standing timber and shad during the shad spawn are worth checking out[4][5].

In terms of bait, minnows are still producing great results, and small hand-tied jigs are also working extremely well. As the water cools off, expect aggressive fish to hit plastics and even large baits[1].

Overall, Lake Fork is offering some fantastic fishing opportunities right now, especially for those after trophy-sized bass and crappie. Make sure to check the current regulations for size and bag limits before you head out.
