The Pokémon Company has officially announced that the classic Kanto remakes, Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version, will launch digitally on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 27, 2026. This release is timed to coincide with Pokémon Day and serves as a major highlight of the franchise's 30th anniversary celebrations.
A Return to the Kanto Region
Originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, these titles are enhanced remakes of the very first Pokémon games from 1996. Players return to the Kanto region to encounter the original 151 Pokémon and interact with iconic characters such as Professor Oak, Brock, Misty, and Giovanni. The Switch versions retain the classic turn-based gameplay and nostalgic soundtrack while featuring all the updates introduced during the GBA era, including Pokémon abilities, natures, weather conditions, held items, and the ability to select the player character’s gender.
Modern Connectivity and Multiplayer
While the games replicate the original experience, they offer updated connectivity for modern hardware. Nintendo Switch players can now link up via local co-op to trade and battle without the need for the physical Game Link Cables used in 2004. It should be noted that multiplayer modes still require each player to have their own system and a copy of the game.
Pricing, Languages, and Availability
Both titles will be available exclusively as digital downloads through the Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store for $19.99 USD each. There is currently no physical release planned for these versions.
The games are available in English, French, and Spanish. However, because the Switch versions are designed to mirror the original releases, each language is a separate purchase; there are no in-game options to switch between languages after a version is bought.
Pokémon Day Presentation
The games are scheduled to become available immediately following a Pokémon Presents broadcast on Friday, February 27, at 6 a.m. PT / 9 a.m. ET. Industry observers noted that while rumors of these ports had persisted for some time, the official announcement occurring a full week before the presentation was unexpected. This early reveal has fueled speculation that the upcoming Pokémon Presents may contain other significant news, such as a potential reveal for the tenth generation of Pokémon games.
