Cleveland Vann came to Oklahoma State in 1970. He played football and pursued a degree in education. He had every intention of becoming a teacher until his success in the sport shifted his plan. Vann went on to play a total of 8 seasons of professional football, five of those in the CFL. He retired from the game in 1980. Without a college degree, Vann’s job options were limited. This past summer, Vann finished his degree. He didn’t meet his goal of being the first in his family to graduate—three of his kids beat him to it. Instead, he fulfilled a promise to his mother he made more than 50 years ago.
