Police trial game-changing crime-fighting drones

Listen Later

New South Wales Police have launched Australia's first trial of crime-fighting drones in the regional town of Moree. The remotely piloted aircraft are controlled from Bankstown Airport in Sydney, more than 600 kilometres away, and cost approximately $100,000 for the trial compared to $4,500 per hour for police helicopters. The technology has sparked privacy concerns despite police assurances the drones will be used in the same manner as manned aircraft, not for routine surveillance.
