He is an American politician and member of the California State Senate, representing the 11th Senate District which includes San Francisco and parts of San Mateo County. He is a Democrat who previously served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing District 8. Wiener has held key positions such as Chair of the San Francisco County Transportation Authority and as a commissioner on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. He has also served on the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District Board. Wiener is recognized for his advocacy in addressing the housing shortage in California and promoting measures to facilitate increased housing construction.
