Poly-L lactic acid (PLLA/Sculptra®Aesthetic) is the only injectable in its class. It has unique characteristics that need to be clearly understood and integrated into injection techniques before injectors reach optimal results and avoid adverse events. PLLA is approved by the FDA for a single regimen for the correction of shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles in which deep dermal grid pattern (cross-hatch) injection techniques is appropriate. However, it is clear from discussions with expert injectors (and peer-reviewed literature) that PLLA is being utilized in a number of areas outside of the approved use. As a result, training is needed throughout the cosmetic injection community to emphasize safe and appropriate injection techniques that will lower adverse effects and improve patient outcomes.
