In this episode of Pond University, we talk with Assistant Professor Jake Hosen from Purdue University. Jake is an aquatic scientist and limnologist with expertise in building sensors to measure water quality parameters. Jake talks to us about some of the basics of water chemistry and how things like salinity and pH can influence pond management. He also talks to us about the exciting technology that he is currently developing, including the potential for digital sensors for pond monitoring and management. We hope you enjoy this episode!

In this episode of Pond University, we talk with Professor Joe Morris from Iowa State University. Joe has worked in pond management and aquaculture for a long time and has a wealth of knowledge and experience on lots of different topics, including aquatic vegetation identification, management and control. Joe is also the director of the North Central Regional Aquaculture Center. Joe talks to us about some of the major considerations when managing aquatic vegetation and some specific management tools including grass carp and herbicides. In this episode of Pond University, we talk with Ciera Baird. Ciera is an Aquatic Ecotoxicologist with Aquatic Control and is an expert on harmful algal blooms. Ciera talks to us about the difference between regular “green” algae and blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, and the types of conditions that can lead to harmful algal blooms. Amie, who is also known as “The Pond Lady”, has over 20 years’ experience helping landowners and homeowner communities manage their ponds. Amie provides invaluable advice on how to start planning now for management that you should consider in the spring. She discusses everything from dams and sediments, to vegetation and fish. She also shares some interesting stories and case studies from her work in Oklahoma, including a mysterious pond slime that can actually move on its own!

In this episode of Pond University, we talk with Scott Wagner, a Certified Agricultural Engineer with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Scott has worked on pond construction and maintenance (among many other things) for over 18 years. Scott discusses the importance of proper planning and permitting for pond construction, and conducting annual inspections for maintaining your pond. He also provides a bunch of useful information and resources for pond management, including potential financial assistance for conservation projects.
