The term “Gatekeeping” according to the Urban Dictionary is “a word used to describe when someone sets a standard/limit on what someone must do to call themselves a ‘true fan’ of something/someone”. Unfortunately, we see it way too often in Pop Culture. You’re not a fan of band ‘x’ because you don’t know their old material. You aren’t a true fan of ‘x’ TV show because you didn’t start watching until last year. Those sequels aren’t part of the ‘x’ universe, only the originals are true. Gatekeeping is toxic, and we are going to discuss why.
