Well, there’s something going on at Sweetwater High Mustang Bowl this Friday night. The news is spreading like wildfire. Everybody’s getting the word. Have you heard about who we are. As a high school football coach in Sweetwater, Texas for 32 years, I enjoyed not only coaching the secondary and teaching my Calculus classes but writing fight songs for the team. Each year, I sang covers as well as my original songs for my classes and at pep rallies for the team, students and local fans.

I love waking up next to her in the morning and laying beside her at night. The beauty I see in her face is exceeding, but, oh how misleading to me. Young love is uncertain at best. Being vulnerable is a requirement. Not knowing what tomorrow brings is guaranteed, but without taking a chance, you will never find out. A broken heart is a likely result, but, you are not the only one and eventually, it will be worth it.

Where have all the red flags gone that waved so high and proud and strong, reminding me to pass on through, cause, we are not the same as you. Driving from West Texas to Southeast Texas for nearly 50 years, I have seen the heart of Texas change, both literally and figuratively. The large cities have all grown and changed, but the small towns seem frozen in time. Politics have flipped from my grandfather's Texas Democrats and seemingly, maybe, possibly back in my 70 years here in Texas. God bless Texas.

Girl, can’t you see, I’m shaking like a leaf on a weeping willow tree, all because of you. Girl, don’t you know, I’m trembling like a little child out playing in the snow, all because of you. All because of you I’ve got this feeling...All because of you I’ve got this feeling...All because of you I’ve got this feeling, and it feels so good. When I wrote these words, after seven years of marriage, I still felt like a young man with his first crush. I am happy to report, after 44 years of marriage, I still feel the same way and it's all because of you.

There is a man that I will always love, till I am merely dust in the wind. We share a friendship, we share common blood. He is my brother and friend. I have always looked up to my big brother. He was my hero when he played high school football. He taught me how to drive and play the guitar. As we became adults, not much changed as he led by example, often helping me navigate the potholes in the journey of life. He truly is my big brother and best friend.

Years ago, my Papa told me, never start what you don’t plan to see through. And I remember how he would hold me, and patiently explain just what to do. My dad was not a big talker, in fact, he was silent during most family conversations. However, when he did speak, you could almost hear a pin drop, because everyone listened carefully to his words of wisdom. My children admired their Pappaw, the kind of person whom they aspire to be like. Hopefully, they will remember me in the same way.

And why it took so long for me to come around I have no answer, but I have often heard it said that God above is never late. And in the end, love is much stronger when you wait, so remember, true love runs slow……….now I know. When I met Genevieve in 1977, we were young and searching for our paths to follow. Four years later those paths crossed again and we fell in love and were married. We have enjoyed every minute together since that time. And why did it take so long? Now I know!

When Andrew rolled into town walls of separation came tumbling down. Spread like a puzzle on the ground, picking up the pieces, here’s what we found. When Hurricane Andrew demolished Miami in 1994, my sister and her family were greatly affected. What they experienced was life altering, but, the resulting love and compassion helped to overshadow the damage and destruction and served to remind them of the triumph of human kindness.

There is a girl that I do not know, I don’t even know her name. I would never recognize her face, but, I love her just the same. When my wife and I adopted our first child, we did not know our birth mother. The process was called a closed adoption and there was limited information available. After four adoptions, we were blessed with a beautiful family and many glimpses into the eyes and hearts of four beautiful young women. We will always cherish that special gift.

I don’t know why I worry so. When I’m sky high there’s only one way to go. When I’m standing tall, there always comes a fall. So, why am I surprised when it’s time to crawl. It doesn't matter how great you think things are going, there's always something lurking ahead to surprise you when you least expect it. You can either lose your composure or you can just laugh at it and move on down the road with a good attitude. But, who am I to say so.
