POR06: George Dascomb And The War of 1812

Listen Later

South Central New Hampshire lies a small town… Population  6,011. Established in 1772 and the birthplace of Franklin Pierce, the 14th president of the United States and the only President from New Hampshire.

Today the town’s largest industry is an OSRAM SYLVANIA Manufacturing Plant. This facility produces automotive and miniature lighting and employees around 500 local residents. That’s over 8% of the town’s population.

Let’s say you were a worker at this plant in Hillsboro, and you wanted to stretch your legs during one of your breaks, you could go out the side door of the facility that is right along West Main Street, the busy two-lane road that snakes through the entire town from east to west.

Walking East along West Main Street right in the middle of all the back and forth traffic of cars heading to a local golf course a block away, or to the Shaws grocery store right up the road, or perhaps to one of the many yard sales that pop up all over town during the weekend. You come across a small 20 by 40-foot area of flat earth marked off by long heavy granite slabs neatly cut and standing on edge outlining the perimeter of what now becomes clear to you is sacred ground.

A small family plot of land that serves as the final resting place of11 members of the Dascomb family.

The largest headstone is marked with the name George Dascomb Born 1765 and died 1842. Along with Geroge is:

George served as a Private in the NH Militia, commanded by Capt. Hugh Moor, and Col Fish during the war of 1812.
