“If you ask him why he started on that last bender, the chances are he will offer you any one of a hundred alibis. Anybody have a bunch of alibis? You know what I mean—excuses like, ‘I lost my job,’ or ‘The old lady left me.’ But in the light of the havoc an alcoholic’s drinking bout causes, these excuses seem pretty weak—ridiculous at times, right?”
Wayne discusses how the Big Book teaches us that these alibis are just that—excuses that distract from the true issue. Real recovery requires a psychic change, a complete transformation of mind and spirit, which is only possible through the principles outlined in the 12 Steps. This session gently foreshadows Step 2, where the need for a power greater than ourselves becomes clear, setting the stage for the spiritual awakening necessary for lasting sobriety.
