Join Wayne Giles as he reads and expands on the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, offering deeper understanding and practical advice for those on their recovery journey. In this Step 2 AA session, Wayne discusses the critical importance of honesty in the recovery process—starting with being truly honest with oneself. Reflecting on his own journey, Wayne shares how it took him 30 years to understand what it meant to be honest with himself, despite being told repeatedly in treatment to “get honest.”
“I thought, ‘What do you mean we’re not getting honest?’ But it took 30 years until I realized what they were talking about—honest with myself—because I didn’t have the capacity to be honest with myself.”
Wayne emphasizes that the first step in recovery is fully conceding to our innermost selves that we are powerless over our addiction, and this concession cannot be based on a lie. True recovery begins when we stop lying to ourselves and face the reality of our situation. This session encourages participants to take a hard look within, recognizing that the capacity for true honesty with oneself is essential for any meaningful change. By embracing this honesty, we align ourselves with the spiritual principles that guide us toward healing and transformation.
