Join Wayne Giles as he reads and expands on the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, offering deeper understanding and practical advice for those on their recovery journey. In this Step 1 AA session, Wayne explores the defensive mechanisms alcoholics often use when confronted with the truth about their addiction. The Big Book points out that when an alcoholic’s fallacious reasoning is exposed, they may laugh it off, become irritated, or refuse to talk, illustrating the deep denial and confusion that often accompanies addiction.
“How many of you would become irritated and just walk away, slam the door, or cause an argument? How many of you would make a joke out of it? We do what suits us in the moment.”
Wayne discusses how, despite all the excuses and justifications, alcoholics often have no real idea why they took that first drink or drug. He reflects on his own experience of occasionally telling the truth, such as when he was honest with the doctor who prescribed him Valium, only to find that honesty didn’t prevent further self-destruction. This session highlights the bewildering nature of addiction and the importance of recognizing that the true solution lies not in understanding the “why,” but in surrendering to the process of recovery through the 12 Steps. By letting go of the need to rationalize and embracing the principles of AA, we can begin to break free from the cycle of addiction.
