Lying prostrate was commonly an act of respect to authority figures.
To kings (1 Sam 24:8, 25:23; Esther 8:3)
To prophets (1 Kings 18:7; Dan 2:46)
To an authoritative relative (Gen 48:12; Ex 18:7; Ruth 2:10) To masters (Mt 18:26,29
To a military leader (2 Sam 18:21)
A friend (1 Sam 20:41)
Such respect was deemed especially appropriate in worship to God. In the OT we see these figures prostrating themselves in worship.
