TTRPG character progression can turn a campaign into a legendary climb, or it can slowly break challenge balance, adventure design, and table expectations. In this Game Master Insight discussion, we examine how advancement changes power, options, character development, character motivation, and the GM’s ability to keep long-term play engaging.

First, we define what growth should mean at the table. Is advancement about bigger numbers, broader options, stronger identity, deeper motivation, greater influence, or a careful mix of several rewards?

Then we compare vertical power creep with horizontal utility. Bigger numbers can create exciting escalation, but they can also make earlier threats irrelevant. Broader utility can create richer player decisions, but it can also increase complexity and slow play if the system does not manage options well.
