Powerful Devotional Styles That Will Improve Your Life

Listen Later

There’s nothing like devotional time, being alone with God! During seasons of growth, we sometimes find ourselves missing the Big Picture. We are so busy “doing” that we don’t take time to “experience”. And if you do not maintain that personal connection to God, you will lose motivation. Burnout. Depression. No one wants that. I’m here to help! (Prayer should be on the list, but devotional times need their place too!)

In this episode, I’ll show you three devotional styles that will help you stay connected. Try changing them up during the week!

The Song Devotional

Sing Your Heart!

This is a simple one! Just pick your favorite hymn or song and sing it over a few times–out loud is great! This makes for a great but simple devotional! Maybe your neighbors would like to hear it too! But if you prefer, sing it in your head. Either way, really think about the words.

A tip is to be sure the song is not just ABOUT God. It’s best to have them TO God. But even the former can be helpful!

Don’t know any great hymns? No worries! I got you covered!

Count Your Blessings

Count Your Blessings!

I recommend that now and then you save this one for times you have time to write a list. When you start with this devotional type, you could find yourself spending a lot of time here. That’s OK of course! It’s hard to be in a bad mood after thinking about all the blessings you have!

Come to think of it, would you share with me below what your greatest blessings in life are? Brag on God a little. I would love to see some good things in the comments!

Deep Dive Devotional

Dive Deep into the Word

This one is a little complex, but I highly recommend it at least once a week! To do it best, it will take 30 minutes to an hour, but the great part about it is there is no prep work! Can you imagine having a “lesson” for an hour without preparation? Does it seem possible? It IS possible with this technique.

First is Retention

This is why you should choose only a few verses–commit this to memory as best you can. You do not need to worry about remembering it later. But the point in the devotional is to meditate on the meaning, and memorization is one of the best ways to do that. You will see things you never noticed before!

As for which verses, that is up to you. You could randomly pick one or two. But you could also do one or two verses at a time through a book. (And that’s what I recommend.) Or you could read a chapter and pick a verse that stands out to you.

Second: Expression (the Meat of the Devotional)

This is the part where you tell God what you see. Specifically, you are answering the question (as best you can) “What does this say about God?” And then TELL Him what that is. It will require some thought, but you can do it! If you’d like help, just message me or comment below!

Third is Relation

Since you found ways the verses speak about God, what does that mean to you? I call it a “touch-point”. Where does this message touch your life and how?

Don’t cheat yourself here. Take the time to really think about how the lesson about God impacts your life.
