The Prepped and Polished Podcast is an educational and inspirational show that offers tutoring and test prep tips as well as interviews with celebrities and leaders in education. It is hosted by Alexis Avila, founder of Prepped and Polished LLC, a tutoring and test prep firm for K-college.
On today's show, Alexis talks to motivational speaker Scott Johnston. Scott Johnston is an entrepreneur (owner of VHS Master, martial artist, toastmaster and motivational speaker. Scott has a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism from California State University, Fresno (Fresno State) and has a passion for helping others. Born three months premature weighing one pound six ounces and diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy he wasn’t given much of a chance to survive let alone thrive. Scott started school in special education and then transitioned to regular education. He was well liked in school, was selected as prom king of his senior prom and graduated from Clovis High School in Clovis, CA as a member of National Honor Society. Scott now uses his story and positivity to speak to students and let them know that if he can make it, they can too! On today’s episode, Scott tells us about how he overcame his struggles with a physical and learning disability and gives his best college and career advice for students facing challenges.
Scott’s advice for students with a physical or learning disability: Don’t give up and keep fighting. Life with a disability is tough and some people will judge you for it but don’t listen to them and stay positive. Also, consider seeing a therapist if you need to talk to someone.
Scott’s advice for students with disabilities getting ready for college: Take a tour of the campus and meet go over your IEP with your advisor in the disabilities service center.
Scott’s final words of wisdom for teens with disabilities: Hold on and stay strong. Life is a marathon. Enjoy college and reach out, date and do everything that your able-bodied peers are doing.
To someone who doesn’t have a disability: If you see someone with a disability, don’t be shy, say hi! And don’t be afraid to learn from him or her.
