P&P Episode 198: Seth Perler "Organization for Disorganized Students"
The Prepped and Polished Podcast is an educational and inspirational show that offers tutoring and test prep tips as well as interviews with celebrities and leaders in education. It is hosted by Alexis Avila, founder of Prepped and Polished LLC, a tutoring and test prep firm for K-college.
On today's show, Alexis talks to Seth Perler , an educator and teen coach. Seth was a teacher for 12 years (several grades and subjects), has a B.A. in Education, an M.Ed. in Gifted Education, has worked with teens with substance issues for 15 years, and taught on a Navajo reservation. On todays episode Seth talks about tips to get disorganized students better organized in school and in life.
Seth’s tips for organization:
Declutter your bedroom and desk, simplify! The more stuff you have the more stuff you have to maintain! Downsize your environment.
Have “homes” for things that are labeled! Keep electronics in baskets for example.
Create systems for organizing their school work, homework and keep it in a logical place to find easily.
Do a Sunday overhaul, so once per week re do and organize all your folders, papers, planners
What is a Queue folder?
The Queue folder is for everything current across all subjects. It’s a catch all for everything current. Ex) put paper that is due in a week in Queue, put science test review sheet in queue.
Seth’s final tips for teens:
Do not give up! #1 biggest problem will have is your own resistance. The key to overcoming resistance is to take baby steps and move inch by inch. The key to happy future is to do things you won’t like, like getting organized and writing papers. Push self beyond comfort zone consistently.
