Practical Lessons for Discerning the Spirit’s Work | Jonathan Edwards

Deep Dive into The Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God by Jonathan Edwards - Practical Inferences

Jonathan Edwards argues that the widespread religious awakening is undoubtedly the work of the Spirit of God. He observes that the revival has effectively turned people away from worldly vanities, awakened their consciences to the reality of sin and God's judgment, and fostered a deep, earnest desire for salvation and scripture. Although some critics dismiss the intense physical and emotional reactions, such as crying out or bodily agonies, as mere confusion or fright, Edwards defends these manifestations. He explains that they typically arise from a genuine conviction of sin, which is subsequently relieved by a profound, comforting realization of the Redeemer's grace. He acknowledges that youthful zeal and a lack of ministerial guidance have led to some imprudence, but insists that imperfections are expected in any great work of God.

Edwards issues a severe warning to those who oppose or hesitate to acknowledge the revival. He compares critics to the Jews who rejected Christ because His arrival did not match their expectations. He cautions that remaining silent, overly demanding a work free of stumbling blocks, or maliciously attributing the revival to the devil could lead to committing the unpardonable sin against the Holy Spirit.

Finally, Edwards exhorts supporters of the revival to remain humble and strictly guard against spiritual pride, which he identifies as the most deceitful and dangerous sin. He warns against trusting inward impulses or impressions as direct divine revelations, arguing that ordinary saving grace and divine love are far superior to miraculous gifts. Furthermore, he advises believers to value human learning, refrain from judging whether other professing Christians are true saints or hypocrites, and avoid angry zeal or unnecessary innovations that might hinder the progress of religion.
