[Intro]

Hello! Holã! Marhaba!

WELCOME to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! Join me, Syazana Sani and the Astro Duo, Azfar Azman and Azimah Azman, your hosts from New York. Let’s strive to educate, regenerate and elevate family institutions through optimal productivity and wellness education, one episode at a time.

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] You are listening to the brand new season of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo, Azfar and Azimah.

This is the second episode of  Season 2. We are now in the last ten (10) days of Ramadan.

[Azfar] We would like to wish Ramadan Kareem to our Muslim listeners. May Almighty God, Allah SWT, grant you the special gift of meeting Laylatul Qadar, the Night of Decree and the Night of Power, which is better than a thousand months, ameen!

“There is also a special link between this night and seeking forgiveness from God.

A’isha R.A. asked the Prophet S.A.W., “O Messenger of Allah! If I knew which night is Laylatul-Qadr, what should I say during it?”

And he S.A.W. instructed her to say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عُفُوٌّ كَرِيمٌ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

O Allah! You are Most Forgiving, and you love to forgive. So forgive me.”

[Syazana] For more information on Ramadan and the significance of Laylatul-Qadr, visit YaqeenInstitute.org and check out the link in the podcast transcript to read its research paper.

[Azfar] Now, let’s continue with the Ramadan theme. Do you want tips to stay fit and healthy in Ramadan? Let’s listen to a wonderful sharing on how to stay fit and healthy in Ramadan by Coach Zarina…

[Azimah] Woohoo!

[Zarina] Ramadan Kareem to all. Thank you Syazana and the Astro Duo for inviting me to this brand new season. I am so happy to be back in this blessed month of Ramadan!

It has been a busy year for me! I lead a variety of classes at several Shape Up NYC locations and Long Island City YMCA. These classes include Bootcamp, Cardio Sculpt, Deep Definitions and Indoor Cycling.

Therefore, it’s very important for me to stay healthy especially in this month where we observe the fast in addition to spiritual development and additional worship to Allah SWT.

[Azfar] What practical tips do you recommend to those who want to stay fit and healthy in Ramadan?

[Zarina] I would like to recommend 3 tips today.

First, I would encourage everyone …

  • To stay active by incorporating exercise or physical activity into your daily schedule

  • It’s always good to check with your doctor first if you are fit to engage in any physical activity or exercise.

  • Once cleared, opt for Low Intensity Workout by using your own Body Weight. This could be a walk around the neighborhood with a few rounds of Squats, Lunges and Push Ups.

  • Stretching is also highly recommended.

  • It’s best if you could include at least 10-15 minutes of exercise routine daily. It could probably ease your body and joints when performing your nightly prayers, inshaa Allah, God willing.

[Azfar] When is the best time to exercise in Ramadan?

[Zarina] The suggested time for a person who is fasting is about an hour before break-of-fast known as Iftar which is at sunset or before the pre-dawn meal known as Suhoor.

  • My second tip would be to consider nutrient-dense meals, water-rich food and plenty of water.

+Foods that are high in Fiber and Protein take longer to digest hence give you steady energy and ease your bowel movement.

Overnight Oats, Whole Grains, Fruits, Lentils & Eggs are some good examples.

+Water-Rich fruits and vegetables such as Cucumber, Celery & Watermelon are certainly good options.

+Remember to drink lots of water to help combat dehydration. Perhaps you can drink more water during Iftar and Suhoor ya!

  1. When breaking your fast during Iftar, it is recommended to break your fast like our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with dates in odd number(s): eat 1, 3, 5 or even 7 pieces if you can.

This reminds me of a narration by Al-Tarmidhi, 658:

When any one of you breaks his fast, let him break his fast with dates for that is a blessing; if there are no dates then with water, for that is a means of purification.”

[Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, 658.]

Dates are easily digested and serve as a quick source of energy and nutrients after a day of fasting!

And my final tip (3) is to take a little rest or naps during the day.

The additional salah or prayers in the evenings to early morning affect your sleep pattern. Rest when you have a chance during the day. A nap helps to recharge the body and definitely improve your mood!

These are my three tips to stay fit and healthy during Ramadan.

Most importantly, listen to your body and do what is best for your physical and spiritual wellness for the sake of Allah SWT.

All the best and Ramadan Kareem everyone!

[Azfar] We hope that you will benefit from the practical tips shared by Coach Zarina.

[Syazana] Till we meet again in the next episode…bye!
