Simple Spiritual Practices

Practicing the Presence of God

Listen Later

Do your days seem to go by in a blur of mundane, meaningless tasks and to-dos? This week, we'll learn about a 16th-century monk who found God simply by washing dishes. We'll talk about practical ways to find meaning, even in the most boring, routine parts of our days.

This Week's Practice: Practicing the Presence of God

What We Learn from Brother Lawrence:

  • Even mindless and mundane tasks can be filled with purpose and meaning.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:31: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
  • It’s possible to connect with God even when you’re doing things that feel like a distraction from God.

Practical Ways to Practice the Presence of God

  • Set an alarm on your phone to go off every hour with the reminder: Practice the presence of God
  • Put a prayer in a visible place (by your computer, on the fridge, etc.): "God, thank you that you are always with me."
  • Say a one-sentence breath prayer throughout your day (Learn more in Episode 4)
  • Practice a daily review to notice how God was with you during all parts of your day (Learn more in Episode 7)
