We have been studying what the Apostle James had to say about prayer. We have been studying the verses from James 5:13-18:
“Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is any Merry? Let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it did not rain on the earth by the space of three years and six months! And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruit.”
Yesterday, we focused on verse 16, “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
We left off yesterday discussing the need for someone to repent of their sins and accept Jesus as their Savior in order to enter into a relationship with the Most High God – who CAN heal them of their sicknesses, etc. Not that God would not do it IF it was His Will to do so…
It’s just that God cannot bless what He’s already cursed. And He has cursed sin. And if the person is living in sin, unrepented sin, willful sin – WHY would God heal him (or her)?
The Bible says we are to “cleanse ourselves” of any sin that defiles us. That’s in 2 Corinthians 7:1. We can only do that through confession and repentance before God. The Bible says in First John 1:9, “If we CONFESS OUR SINS, He is faithful and just to FORGIVE OUR SINS and to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness.”
So, once again, we see that WE are responsible for cleansing ourselves – and we do that by confession of our sins before God.
It is not necessary that we confess them before men. It is not necessary that we confess them one at a time or try to remember them all…
“I took a cookie when I was 12 when I wasn’t supposed to… I said something mean to my sister when I was 13…” or anything like that.
We were BORN in sin. We LIVED in sin. We ENJOYED sin. WE ARE SINNERS – and for those that confessed they are or were sinners – we were, what does scripture say? SAVED BY GRACE!
That is what we need to make the sick person understand when they ask us to pray for them – that they NEED to receive Jesus as their Savior and have their sins cleansed once and for all time. Amen!
Lead them into that spiritual condition – and THEN pray for their healing.
You will be astounded at how fast God raises them up!
Why? Because they are His children now! Praise God!
Amen! I could go on and on… but I won’t.
