Scripture For Today:
Acts 14:23
“Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.”
Learn to Depend on the Holy Spirit pt 2
We have been talking about how praying in tongues is the Holy Spirit actually helping us in our prayer life. Romans 8:26 says, “Likewise, the Spirit also HELPS our infirmities…”
The Apostle Paul here was talking about prayer, because he also said in Romans 8:26 that we do not know what we should actually be praying for. So the subject in this verse is about prayer.
If speaking in tongues and praying with tongues is not for us today, then that would mean this is one type of help from the Holy Spirit that is not available to the Body of Christ today. Which means we would be denied this help. That would go against everything Jesus died for so that we could be adequately equipped to make it through this life in this world. And, I would venture to say, that you would be agreement that we have it a little harder, spiritually, living in society today than it would have been back then. Right?
But, this give HAS NOT been done away with, as some denominations mistakenly believe…
Acts 2:4 says, “…they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” So, if speaking in tongues was the Spirit giving them utterance, then praying in tongues is the Spirit giving US utterances today. Amen!
And if the Spirit is giving us utterances today, then He IS helping us to pray – today! Glory to God!
In Acts 10:46, we can read where those filled with the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues and “magnified God.” So that means when WE speak in tongues – WE are magnifying God as well. Glory to God!
Now, I want to cover this point with an explanation. Some people read Romans 8:26 in a casual way and jump to their own conclusions and miss what it actually says. Some people believe this verse means the Holy Spirit will pray FOR YOU. That is not what it says at all…
It says the Holy Spirit HELPS US TO PRAY. He does not pray for you. He does not pray apart from the believer.
If the Holy Spirit did your praying for you, then He would be the One who would be responsible for your prayer life – not you. You would never have to pray because you know He would do a better job of it than you could.
The Holy Spirit is there to HELP YOU PRAY. You can depend on Him to help you. We all have needs and circumstances in this life where we need help. We need to have our needs met. Some of these things we can take care in the natural (like groceries, etc.). But there are situations that arise where we do not know what to do.
When we pray in those situations, if you simply pray with your understanding, really, all you are doing is praying to put a little band-aid on your conscious so you can say, “I prayed…” That is it.
If you allow the Holy Spirit to guide you through the praying in other tongues, you will be bringing specific things to bear on the problems. Things you had no idea needed to be said, but through the Holy Spirit and with His help in your prayer – these things are now being brought to bear in the situation. Amen!
