The past few days, I’ve been sharing with you some comparisons about various parts of the body working together – even though they all have different functions. The main thing I’ve been emphasizing is, no matter how small or insignificant the body part or function, if ALL of the parts are not harmonized and working together, the whole body suffers.
Today, I just want to summarize for you what we’ve discovered about different denominations all being part of the Body of Christ.
We realized, in our example, that it takes all different kinds of people and skills to work together with one goal – building the house. Each person has different areas of responsibility. Each person must get their job accomplished – often before someone else can come in and continue the building process.
Each denomination, each church in your community – has a different responsibility. Each pastor has certain people he or she can reach. And each pastor has certain people that they will never reach. Even in the same church!
When we had our church, not all the time, but often, I would say something to the effect of, “If something I have said today has tugged your heart and you want to receive Jesus as your Savior, come forward or let me know so we can pray together.”
Then I would add, “If you are looking for a church, but you’re not sure if this church is right for you – it probably isn’t. I’m not going to beat around the bush here. If you tell me what you are looking for in a church – I know a lot of pastors in this town and I can introduce you or send you to a church that will minister to YOU.”
You see, I want to build the Body of Christ. I did not – and I do not – need to have excess baggage in my ministry that holds me back from ministering to the people GOD has called me to minister to!
I may offend many pastors by saying this, but so be it. STOP worrying about church attendance and START worrying about the Body of Christ as a whole!
The first part is YOU trying to do SOMETHING. The second is God using YOU to do something!
There is HUGE difference! Amen!
That is what I mean by “We need different denominations!” YOU cannot minister to every person that walks through your doors to “see what you are about.” Stop pretending you can!
Using the references to different skill sets that are necessary to build a house, I will close with this…
Have you ever noticed it takes a former alcoholic to minister to an alcoholic? Or a former drug addict to minister to another drug addict? Or a former prostitute to minister to a prostitute? Why is that?
Because they can relate.
So, if you are a plumber, you need to go to a plumbers church. If you are a roofer, you need to go to a roofers church. If you are an electrician, you need to attend an electricians church.
A plumber attending a roofers church, where the lingo is about roofing terminology and inside jokes, etc., is not going to “fit in.” Just like an electrician attending a plumbers church won’t fit in.
You need to attend a church that is matched to you!
Now do you see why we need all of the denominations we have? Each serves a particular purpose. But together, we are all building the Body of Christ!
Let’s Pray!
