Overview: If I put two things in front of you- sin and hell. Of which are you more afraid- Sin prevents us from seeing the ugliness and wrongness of our sin. Men and womaen hate the good and holy god. Sin is an attitude that wants to defy God and spit in His face. If we can't see this ugliness, we are dulled and deceived by sin. Sin wants you to live like an animal. It wants to kill you. Jesus saw tearing an eyeball out as less extreme than sinning against God. But we don't see sin in this way. We would rather sin than suffer. We need help. This is the way Luke ends it. This call for help in prayer is an acknowledgement of weakness. We don't have the power within us to win this war. Sin is always working against us. It wants to destroy us. Like a rhino in a restaurant, it doesn't have any authority, but it has controlling and damaging power. Especially if it, like sin, never rests and is always focused on destroying you. If you are not concerned about sin, you are already far down the road. If it feels safe, we tend to be less careful. Sin is always worse than the rumors. Apart from God's grace, you have no hope of escape. Many things we are afraid of are not actually that frightening in reality. But what we are not afraid of is dreadfully terrifying in reality. Like going out to diner with your own assassin. It is impossible to be too cautious about sin. Especially when it is a sin that particularly attracts us. Embrace other people's warnings to you when they see you falling prey to sin. The strongest Christians are those who are most conscious of their vulnerability to sin and their weakness. Such people beg for help in prayer.
