The Psalmist takes us through the song is Ascents. He is ascending from the depths of sinful hopelessness, distraught and utter darkness and damnation. He then climbs fr9m this depths (1,2) to the a confession of his sin (3,4), to hope (5,6) and then to a praise of assurance (7,8).
