Ever had that sinking feeling underwater when something doesn't seem right with your breathing? Before you descend on your next dive, a quick regulator inspection could mean the difference between a memorable dive and a scary emergency. In this episode, PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer Marcus Okafor walks through the twelve inspection points he personally checks before every single dive—whether it's his own high-end setup or a rental reg he's never touched before. This is essential listening for any diver who wants to catch problems on the boat instead of at seventy feet.

  • Your hoses can show warning signs before they fail. Run your fingers along every hose looking for cracks, bulges, or a crackly texture that feels like Rice Krispies when you squeeze it. These signs mean the hose is breaking down inside and could burst during your dive.
    • The tiny O-ring that seals your regulator to the tank is surprisingly important. This small rubber ring creates an airtight seal, and even a single grain of sand or a small nick can cause leaks that waste your air supply. Always inspect it and clean off any debris before connecting.
      • A sticky purge button often means trouble is coming. The purge should press smoothly and spring back instantly—if it feels mushy or slow, salt buildup or a worn spring could cause your regulator to start free-flowing air uncontrollably at depth.
        • Watch your pressure gauge after pressurizing to catch hidden leaks. After you turn on your tank, wait thirty seconds and make sure the needle stays completely still. A slowly dropping needle means air is escaping somewhere, and that leak will only get worse underwater.
          • Test-breathe your regulator before you get in the water. Take several deep breaths through both your primary and backup regulators while still on the boat. Breathing should feel easy in both directions—if inhaling or exhaling feels hard, something inside needs attention before you dive.
