Prelude | Jesus' Great Hits

Listen Later

As a kid I loved music. I still love music. I ingest it like crazy. From what iTunes and Spotify (and my data plan) tell me, I listen to music around 4 hours a day. I have stacks of vinyl records I love to listen too as well.

When I was a kid, if you wanted to listen to a particular artist, you had to be efficient with your money. The solution was buying a greatest hits collection. You knew the songs would be good, they would be the ones you heard on the radio and there would (most likely) not be a dud in the bunch.

Artists created these compilations to satisfy new fans appetite for music. They introduced the entire catalog in an easy, listenable format. If you want to get new listeners…just come out with a great hits collection.

Jesus' Greatest Hits

The gospel of Matthew is one of the early writings about the life of Jesus that we have. Matthew was a tax collector, considered to be one of the 12 disciples of Jesus and a leader in the early church. He ultimately died as an evangelist in Ethiopia, while ministering and starting churches.

In Matthew's book about Jesus, we call it the gospel of Matthew, he writes 3 super intentional chapters. The church has historically called these three chapters the "Sermon on the Mount", because of Jesus' location and specific teaching. The funny thing is, other gospel writers record some of these same stories and sayings and put them in a different timeline than Matthew. No worries.

This doesn't change the message of Jesus or mean any of it is false. Scholars look at these three chapters of Matthew and tell us that the writer intentionally placed and crafted these sayings of Jesus into this specific place. Matthew was trying to come up with the most easily digestible summary of Jesus teachings, while also featuring the way Jesus taught and how folks reacted to Jesus teachings. Matthew was putting together Jesus' Greatest Hits.

So this summer we will be listening, reading and living inside this collection. This Sunday we will worship in a really different way as we begin intentionally listening to Jesus and His sermon on the Mount.
